Jiu Chang, a pioneer of the TEDxBranksomeHallAsia, mentioned why she wanted to organize this event.
"These days, I had a few discussions with our school teachers about interesting issues such as Milton Friedman's view on education and monopoly. Listening to their insights on those specific topics, I found sharing and developing ideas and widening my perspective on various issues delightful. I discovered that everyone has interesting insights on at least one topic that is unique and fresh and therefore extremely valuable. I also realized that listening to their insights made me start to ponder on the issues, which I had absolutely no interest before. I sought to listen to valuable insights from more people. I wished other people could also be just as delighted as I was. In addition, I wanted to learn public speaking skills from other people. Public speaking is one of my weakest qualities and I wanted to overcome it by watching TED talks and evaluating them”. -Jiu Chang

The goal was to enrich the intellectual tone of the Branksome Hall Asia community. The talks at the event were aimed to deliver inspiring messages to the attendees, which could influence the audience to start contemplating on issues that they had not cared for before. By listening to speakers with various stances on certain issues, the attendees were expected to broaden their perspectives. TEDxBranksomeHallAsia could be the first step to build a community where “everyone lives like the way one thinks, and not end up thinking about the way one has lived”, as Paul Bourget wrote.
TEDxBranksomeHallAsia was held on April 22nd, 2017 at the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) in Branksome Hall Asia, Global Education City, Jeju Island.
